Airdire resident wins $1 million on LOTTO 6/49!

“A really nice surprise!”

Donald Newell’s Thursday started with a bang! The Airdrie local checked his LOTTO 6/49 ticket the morning after the July 31 draw and was stunned to see he had won the $1 million Guaranteed prize on the Gold Ball draw.

“I was having my morning coffee and thought I would check some tickets,” he said. “I saw ’Appears to be a winner’ flash on the screen and my reaction was ‘Uhh, okay… I think I won something here.’”

“I checked the ticket again and waited for my wife to come home to tell her,” he said.

Newell explained he decided to have some fun telling his wife the good news.

“I told her I have bad news and good news,” he explained. “I said, ‘The bad news is: we have to drive to St. Albert. The good news is: it’s because we won $1 million!’”

The new millionaire said he and his wife are still thinking about what to do with their recent windfall.

“It’s a really nice surprise,” he said. “I’m looking forward to enjoying the money as well as having a bit of a financial cushion.”

Newell picked up his $10 LOTTO 6/49 ticket at the Save-on-Foods at 1400 Market Street SE in Airdrie. The million-dollar-winning selection on the July 31 draw was 29358669-01, a white ball.
