Yellowknife resident claims NWT's biggest ever lottery windfall!
Laura Tutcho is the winner of $55 million LOTTO MAX jackpot
Talk about the surprise of a lifetime! Laura Tutcho had no idea that her $11 LOTTO MAX ticket would net her the biggest lottery jackpot that Northwest Territories has ever seen. The Yellowknife winner is now $55 million richer after the May 1 LOTTO MAX draw!
“I’m just beside myself,” Tutcho said. “It’s so exciting and overwhelming!”
The elated winner bought her winning LOTTO MAX ticket – an $11 quick pick – from the Reddi Mart convenience store at 60-5014 49 Street in Yellowknife.
"My granddaughter told me that someone in Yellowknife won the jackpot,” she remembered. “So I went on the internet to check the numbers.”
It turned out Tutcho was the only player across Canada to match all seven main winning numbers on the May 1 draw – 3, 12, 25, 36, 37, 42, and 49 – and had won the $55 million main jackpot that evening.
“I was in shock!” Tutcho remembered. “I said, ‘Oh, my god!’ My grandkids came in right away, and my grandson asked, ‘Are you all right, Grandma?’”
“I just kept looking at the ticket, and looking back at the numbers. My granddaughter told me,‘The numbers haven’t changed, Grandma!’” she laughed.
Once the shock wore off a bit and Tutcho realized she was about to become a multimillionaire, she knew she needed to take action. She’s spent much of the time since discovering her win consulting with investment and financial advisers and making plans for this unprecedented windfall.
She said her priority is to use the money to help her immediate family.
Originally from Délı̨nę, Tutcho spent her career as a freelance interpreter dedicated to the revitalization of the Sahtúgot’ı̨ne language.
