Winnipeg resident claims $13.3 million LOTTO 6/49 jackpot!
Manitoba's newest lottery winner looks forward to golfing, enjoying retirement
A set of numbers that played a part in his working life have taken on a whole new significance in Murray Lewis’s retirement.
The Winnipeg resident won $13,345,152.30 on the February 27 LOTTO 6/49 649 draw with numbers he has been playing for about 30 years— 4, 13, 22, 25, 29, and 39.
“They’re not exactly special numbers,” said the new winner. “They’re stamp numbers.”
“I worked in quality assurance,” he explained. “I took my approval stamp number and some of the other guys’ numbers and started using them for LOTTO 6/49.”
The winner said he discovered his win hours after the draw, but chose to take some time before claiming his prize to let his initial shock sink in.
“I woke up in the middle of the night, and I checked the numbers while I was up,” he said. “I couldn’t get back to sleep so I looked up the winning numbers.”
“I stared at the numbers in stunned silence for a couple of seconds; I couldn’t believe it – I was seeing my numbers!” he continued. “I didn’t sleep any more that night. I’m still waiting for it all to sink in.”
Lewis bought his winning ticket at the PharmaPlus located at 963 Henderson Highway in Winnipeg.
As for some ideas for his winnings, Lewis says he plans to keep it simple.
“A while ago my buddies and I planned a golfing trip to Myrtle Beach,” he said. “I was going to get new irons for the trip either way, but I may have splurged a little after finding out I won the lottery.”
Lewis said he hopes to book more golfing trips in the future, but for now, he’s happy getting used to the reality of his win.
“Being able to do whatever I want, whenever I want, is a dream come true,” he said. “I don’t need anything fancy; taking care of my family and being worry-free is good enough for me.”
