Winnipeg group wins $3.5 million LOTTO 6/49 jackpot
Four long-time friends win big on their yearly lottery subscription
When Ashok Prashar saw he had a voicemail message from Western Canada Lottery Corporation, he thought it was a reminder to renew the LOTTO 6/49 subscription he plays with three of his close friends. But he had a surprise in store when he returned the call.
“We don’t call you for renewals,” the WCLC representative told him. “We call you when you’ve won.”
Prashar and his friends won $3.5 million on the Saturday, November 4 LOTTO 6/49 draw. They shared the $7 million prize with a winning ticket sold in Ontario. The winning numbers were 1, 2, 6, 21, 22, and 33.
The other three group members are Bhadresh Bhatt, Swatanter Parbhakar, and Ravi Chhibba.
Prashar called the others right away. But he didn’t want to share the news over the phone.
“I told them I wanted to meet them all together,” he remembered. “I didn’t want to have to tell them separately.”
“I thought he was going to ask us for money to renew the subscription,” Chhibba laughed.
“We usually get together at night, so it was strange that he would call us during the day,” Parbhakar said. “We didn’t know if there was something wrong. But we’ve all been friends for years. If one of us needs something, we’ll be there.”
They all met at a coffee shop, and Prashar didn’t waste time sharing the good news.
“I just said, ‘We won three and a half million dollars.’”
“I asked if he was sure,” Bhatt said. “He gave me the number of the lady from WCLC and said to call her myself. She confirmed it – that’s when I believed him.”
The long-time friends said they haven’t had much time yet to consider what to do with their shares of the windfall. The four group members and their wives have already been planning an Alaskan cruise.
“We’ll have lots of time to talk about it then,” Parbhakar said.
