Manitoba’s new lottery millionaire planning tropical golf getaway
Laurie Czech got the shock of a lifetime when he won a million-dollar lottery prize. The Brandon resident won the $1 million Guaranteed Prize on the January 4 LOTTO 6/49 draw.
Czech bought his winning LOTTO 6/49 ticket for the January 4 and 7 draws from Mac’s Convenience Store at 855 1st Street in Brandon. That ticket matched the winning GuaranteedPrize Draw number on January 4 – 31656449-01.
He discovered his windfall when he scanned his ticket at the same store.
“I thought I won $1,000 at first,” he said. “And I was happy with that! I’ve been playing for 20 years, and I’ve only ever won a few dollars here and there before.”
“But when the clerk scanned it, her eyes got wide, and she said, ‘You won a million dollars!’ I blurted out, ‘Bull—,’ he laughed. “I couldn’t help myself.”
“I don’t think it’s actually hit me yet,” he said. “I’m a millionaire. A millionaire! I don’t know if I’ll ever get my head wrapped around that.”
Czech said he plans to use some of his winnings to indulge in a long-held dream: golfing in Hawaii.
“I always got a kick out of that old LOTTO 6/49 commercial with a bunch of friends golfing together after winning the lottery,” he said. “That’s going to be me and some of my golfing buddies.”
But before he takes off on his dream vacation, Czech said he’s planning another, more modest, purchase.
“I’m going to splurge and get a new cell phone,” he laughed. “I’m still using this old flip phone!”
